A Letter to Tyrion

Dear Tyrion,

Hand of the King,

Formerly of Casterly Rock

I hope this letter finds you in good health, in better spirits, and with a full head. Because I gotta hand it to you, man, you have been through so much more than the other characters in GOT.

It doesn’t take a green-seer to see how much the throne is in your debt, for you were The Hand who stepped up even when this city of liars did little to deserve you. How easy it is to confuse ‘what is’ with ‘what ought to be’ and so, instead of parading through the streets like a hero, there you remain locked in a dungeon for a crime you didn’t commit. But then again, when have you ever been truly free? Aye, you were born a little lion cub but always under the shadow of a lion king. Nothing is right or wrong when it's The Game of Thrones. The only thing that may matter is how we behave in the darkest situations. How we behave when we achieve victory. How we behave when we fail to achieve it. You were always the same in every situation. Whether you failed. Whether you become the hand.

Yet all the mighty castle walls couldn’t keep you from falling in love with a commoner. A whore they called her! They degraded her, shamed her, and amidst all the abuses they turned her into a ghost. A ghost that’s haunting you ever since, a ghost of grayscale that has turned your heart to stone. And when the past isn’t worth reminiscing, what does one do but become the God of tits and wine? Although you have kept a sense of humor about it and wore it all like armor, you have been on trial your entire life for being a dwarf. But you showed us that with a grandiosity of spirit and a little wit, one can survive as a misfit. So, I couldn’t help but admire your courage when you refused to rest your fate in the hands of Gods yet again and demanded a trial by combat in the court of Vale as well as in King’s Landing. You might have never vied for The Iron Throne yet you might be the person who’s best equipped to rule Westeros. You have the Family name, you’ve served as the Hand and as Master of Coin and there’s no better person who can turn his enemies into allies, your father being the great exception. You clearly know the difference between conquering a kingdom and ruling a kingdom, which Robert didn’t. You are not as spiteful as Cersei and you’re not as naive as Daenerys. Tyrion Lannister, there has been no one who has better understood the functioning of the Seven Kingdoms than you. You might be a dwarf, but you have risen in stature over the years that we’ve seen you.

Since the start, I have believed in you. I always knew that you’ll make it. The one whose battle was always with the world, which questioned your abilities. But you always turned the game on your intellect.

When one plays the game of thrones, they either live or die. I am happy that you are alive and well have risen up against all odds. You have taken up a seat alongside the council of kings. Long may you live and serve the realm, Imp.

Yours truly, Balaji Murugan
